What are some good tips you would give me if I want to take a good "portrait" of anyone with my digital camera?
I am not a professional photographer. I have got a compact (point & shoot) digital camera from Canon but its a good one. I don't want to buy a DSLR camera.
Rule #1 - Don't use the on-camera flash, if you can help it. Direct flash off the camera always looks terrible - especially if its not diffused in any way. Use natural light. Find a place that has enough to give you a proper exposure without using flash.
Remember that an easy way to make photos interesting is by taking them from angles that people aren't used to seeing in their daily lives.
And, for portraiture, don't be afraid to get in close - really close. If there's nothing in the background that needs to be in the photograph in order to convey some sort of message to the viewer - like, say, you want people to know that the subject is in Paris, and you're shooting in front of the Eiffel Tower - then you don't need it in there. So, don't be afraid to crop as much out of the background as possible. You can go so far as to frame the subject so the bottom of the image cuts off the bottom part of their chin, and the top cuts off the top of the head.
Also, don't be afraid to experiment. Take as many pictures as you can trying as many different things as you can think of. Even if something might seem silly before you do it and you're sure it wont work, try it anyway. You can just delete the pic if it doesn't work. And, if it does work, there's a chance you could end up with an amazing shot.
In fact, that's the dirty secret of pro-photography - pros shoot, and shoot, and shoot, and shoot, and shoot some more. They might end up deleting 99.9% of all the images they took. But, the more you shoot, the more you increase the odds you might stumble onto one of those miraculous accidents and come away with a shot that makes people's jaws drop.
***EDIT: When I said "get in close", I was speaking in the compositional sense. You could "get in close" with a 500mm lens. But, I would try "getting in close" - physically - as well. What have you got to lose other than the few seconds it takes to snap the photo? And, you could end up with an extremely interesting shot. One of my best selling shots ever is a close-up of a very old man taken very, very close in with a 24mm lens.
